Half-Rim Sunglasses: Shape and Fit
Half-rim sunglasses have a frame around part of the lens, commonly along the upper edge, with the lower edge left open. You may also see similar styles described as semi-rim or semi-rimless.
What does a half-rim shield look like?
A shield uses one broad lens across both eyes. In a half-rim shield, the frame supports part of that lens without enclosing its entire edge. Our Shield Cycling Sunglasses, for example, pair a defined upper frame with an open lower lens edge and adjustable nose pads.
Compare three frame styles
| Frame style | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Full-rim | A frame that surrounds the lens edge |
| Half-rim | A frame around part of the lens, with another edge left open |
| Rimless | A lens mounted without a surrounding rim |
Each style has a different outline and supports the lens in a different way. Lens materials and features vary by pair, so compare UV protection, polarization and photochromic options alongside the frame shape.
Choose by proportions and fit
The open lower edge gives a half-rim frame its distinctive outline. For a comfortable fit, compare frame width, lens height and temple length with glasses you already enjoy wearing. Consider the lens curve and nose support, too.
For cycling, try the glasses with your helmet. Adjust the nose pads on styles that offer them, following the care and fit instructions for your pair. Check that the lens clears your eyelashes and cheeks and that the temples sit comfortably.
Care for the open lens edge
Follow your pair's cleaning and storage instructions. Avoid gripping or pressing hard on the exposed lens edge. Rinse away dust before wiping with a clean, soft microfiber cloth and store the glasses away from heat and pressure.
