How to Choose Cycling Sunglasses
Cycling sunglasses should be compared in the setting where you will wear them. The frame has to sit comfortably with your helmet, and the chosen lens should match the information available for your route and conditions. Start with the cycling collection, then compare the details of a few specific styles.
Compare three distinct options
| Style | Selected lens feature | Size and weight |
|---|---|---|
| Angular cycling shield | Polarized options | Approx. 5.31 inch frame width, 5.12 inch temple, 26 g |
| Vented cycling shield | Photochromic options | Approx. 5.24 inch temple, 2.36 inch lens height, 24 g |
| Rimless shield | Photochromic options | Approx. 5.35 inch frame width, 5.20 inch temple, 25 g |
The table is a starting point, not a ranking. Measurements and weight are approximate. Check the current product selector because lens properties can vary with the option you choose.
Polarized and photochromic answer different questions
A polarized option is intended to reduce reflected glare. A photochromic option changes tint in response to conditions. Do not assume that a photochromic label also establishes polarization, or that every color in a product selector has the same behavior. Check the selected option rather than just the collection heading.
Changing tint is not necessarily instantaneous. If your route moves repeatedly between open light and shade, ask what response information is available for the particular lens. Check readability of the devices you use while wearing a polarized pair. The REI sunglasses overview explains these lens differences; our lens guide connects them to the current EMBER ROVE options.
Check your helmet and riding position
Wear your own helmet when checking fit. Look ahead in your normal riding posture, turn your head and look down. Notice whether the temples create pressure beside the helmet, whether the bridge slips and whether the lower lens edge touches your cheeks. Check the temples against your own helmet to find a comfortable fit.
Ventilation is a feature to compare, not a fog guarantee
The vented shield has openings in its temple design. Look at the product photos to understand their placement. Weather, effort and fit can still affect fogging, so do not treat the visible vents as a promise that fog cannot occur. Avoid changing or blocking the frame's intended openings.
Before you choose a color
- Confirm the exact lens option.
- Compare width, temple length and lens height where available.
- Check your helmet and nose fit.
- Read the package contents and care instructions.
